Happy holidays
What’s longer… A microwave minute or watching a video someone insists is hilarious while they hold the phone and tell you to wait for the good bit?
Fortunately we’re not about to show you our favourite videos but, before we take a break for a few weeks, we wanted to share six restaurants we’re most recommending right now. Some oldies, all goldies, and all in London (sorry to our home county readers).
We did this back in December and it went down well (apparently the traffic we sent to one restaurant’s website crashed it). Are we influenzas? Maybe. Are the six below worth your time? Definitely.
Manteca
Manteca is an Italian-inspired diner based in Shoreditch (having previously been in Soho). Expect nose-to-tail cooking, hand-rolled pastas and wood-fired breads. Chef’s kiss.
The Sea, The Sea
Arguably London’s best fishmonger - and my go-to - The Sea, The Sea has two restaurants. One in Chelsea (a casual bar/terrace, see above), and one in Haggerston (a 14-seat Chef's Table experience). Both are beaut.
Perilla
Located off Newington Green (north-east London), Perilla is seriously good and seriously good value. Food focuses on a modern interpretation of classic European flavours. Nothing too fancy or formal.
F.K.A.B.A.M
Formerly known as Black Axe Mangal (hence the acronym), if you’re a seasoned London foodie then you may know this place already. Expect Turkish-mangal-grill-house vibes, a fixed price menu (see above), heavy metal music and heavily tattooed chefs.
Trullo
Right next to F.K.A.B.A.M in Highbury & Islington is Trullo - an Italian trattoria that’s been around since 2010. Hand-made pasta and charcoal grilling are counterpoints of a menu that will transport you to Puglia, Positano or Portofino. Whichever floats your superyacht.
Tom’s Pasta
Just by Hackney Downs Park, Tom’s Pasta is a no-nonsense ode to Italian cuisine with a small but weekly changing menu. Lasagne Season (yep, that’s a thing here) is just about to end, but the menu is packed with other comforting classics. Well worth a visit.
Final thought
Eat My Words is taking a break for a few weeks (mainly so we have enough time to figure out how to make Coronation Quiche tasty).
